Calcutta University - New Campus

The proposal for Calcutta University tries to re-frame an otherwise grounded, interactive and free flowing atmosphere of knowledge, learning and creativity in a vertical format. Accommodating the over 5 lakh sft. area required for all functional parts of the university necessitated this vertical form. Our proposal celebrates this place as one supporting the highest levels of academic experience and learning, but it also celebrates the process of learning by doing, learning from each other and learning in a conducive atmosphere.

There are 4 layers - streets that cut across thematically organised building blocks, interspersed multi-scalar public spaces, easy legibility and site orientation to maximise expansive views and also create a bold, commanding visual presence. Use of angular geometries and juxtaposition of elements adds drama and dynamism to the campus. This also maximised orientational advantages and mitigates the odd shape of the site, while at the same time preserving the important features of the existing ecology. Visual clues from landmark institutions serve as the basis for scale and proportions of spaces in this campus.

Finally, the focus on GRIHA green building principles including the use of innovative climate responsive features and non-conventional systems of energy efficiency adds to user-comfort and minimises the energy footprint of the campus.
