Temple of Vedic Planetarium

This project has been evolved as a result of our continued association with ISKCON at Mayapur Dham, West Bengal. This project has been discussed, debated and lot of ideas been explored for almost for two decades. The main issue is to develop a sensible design brief, functional programme based on the values of ISKCON and identification of an appropriate temple typology with matching architecture style to sustain their rituals, practices and aspirations. In every aspect - architecture, scale, engagement, this project is unique- “A Unique Temple”(EK Advut Mandir). Vaishnavite tradition stresses collective worship as against the individualistic Hindu worship and ‘kirtan’, ’parikrama’ are essential parts of the ritual. Therefore, large gathering spaces in front of the deity are necessary to enact this dynamic sacred performance. This is very different from the conventional temple typology. The proposal accommodates about 10,000 devotees in the central puja space. Other associated activities like Bhog preparations, devotee centres, prasadam hall, cosmic planetarium, exhibition, interpretation halls etc are required to service such a mega structure. We used architecture reference models of landmark global edifices and arrived at a Temple Dome that is 100 meters high. Finally, the project accommodated site constraints, and an efficient crowd management system for safety and security. Various material palettes, architectural detailing has been explored to put together an image with matching ambiance to meet the aspirations of ISKCON Devotees and the global audience.
