Revitalisation of Old Silver Mint

The Silver Mint is one of the landmark colonial buildings in Kolkata, playing a pivotal role in treasury regulation and management for the British Empire. The Revitalisation of Old Silver Mint was an effort to bring back this historic campus into modern day use, with a focus on re-enabling this campus for development of Tourism Infrastructure.

The Strand Road divides this campus into two zone, which was considered in the proposal. A detailed condition assessment (historicity, value, structural condition appraisal) helped frame key strategies. The imposing façade of Grecian - Doric architecture, the spacious volumes and beautiful open spaces were all key assets and were kept intact and restored. The restoration plan adopted a minimum intervention approach, only intervening to value add to the existing assets.

The revitalised campus accommodated functions such as a Money Museum, a commercial hub and convention centre, an archive and general infrastructure and hospitality facilities to sustain the sizeable crowd that this significant site commands.
