Located in the ecologically sensitive landscape of the Sundarbans, the Beacon Bungalow is a significant heritage structure built in 1903 by Sir Daniel Hamilton as the centre of his pioneering cooperative movement in Gosaba. The site also holds historical importance for hosting Rabindranath Tagore during his visit in 1932.
This rare, stilted timber bungalow reflects Scottish architectural influences adapted to the deltaic environment through innovative shipbuilding-inspired construction techniques. Today, the structure faces severe deterioration due to neglect and insensitive interventions.
The concept proposal envisions restoring the bungalow’s architectural integrity while reactivating the precinct as a responsible cultural destination. Beyond conservation, the project aims to revive local crafts, celebrate intangible heritage, and create opportunities for community participation and livelihood generation.
Conceived as a model of heritage-led regeneration, the project seeks to reconnect architecture, ecology, and community within the fragile landscape of the Sundarbans.
