Located in Birsingha, the birthplace of Pandit Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar, this project focuses on the conservation of one of Bengal’s most significant educational heritage precincts. The site includes two Grade I heritage mud buildings associated with Bhagabati Vidyalaya, founded by Vidyasagar, one of India’s foremost educationists and social reformers.
The 19th-century vernacular structures had suffered extensive deterioration due to age, weathering, and prolonged neglect. The conservation process centred on restoring their architectural integrity using traditional earthen construction techniques, locally sourced materials, and skilled vernacular craftsmen. Careful structural stabilisation, repair of mud walls, conservation of timber elements, and restoration of traditional finishes ensured that the buildings retained their original character while improving their long-term durability. The project also helped revive the living tradition of earthen construction by combining traditional knowledge with appropriate technical improvements.
The heritage buildings have now been carefully restored and secured, preserving their architectural authenticity and historical significance for future generations. Building on this completed conservation work, the larger vision proposes the adaptive reuse of the precinct as a knowledge and interpretation centre celebrating Vidyasagar’s life, ideas, and legacy. A new interpretation pavilion and a landscape inspired by the spirit of a Gurukul Ashram, echoing the educational philosophy later embodied by Rabindranath Tagore’s Santiniketan, are envisioned to create a destination for learning, reflection, and cultural tourism.
The project demonstrates how responsible conservation of vernacular architecture can safeguard traditional building knowledge while creating a sustainable framework for the future revitalisation of culturally significant heritage precincts.
