Mogholmari Excavation Site

The village of Moghalmari is situated near Dantan in Paschim Medinipur. The site was once located on the left bank of the Subarnarekha river before the river shifted its course. Explorations in this region have revealed the remains of Buddhist existence in the region, dated to 15th century and part of the bigger Buddhist movement in eastern India. The excavation site is locally known as the Sakhisenar Dhipi. This site has seen reiterative excavations between 2003-2014. Main conservation issues pertain to protecting the excavation and the authenticity of the site in general. This is challenging because the whole site is exposed to the elements and also has no clear demarcated land hence is susceptible for damage and theft. The short-term conservation strategy thus focuses on proper delineation of the site, general protection of the archaeological remains from the natural elements, protection of the structural integrity of the site, creating access controls, a makeshift interpretation centre, a proper site access and provision for further managed planned excavation processes.

Site preparation and removal of all temporary structures and unwanted growth kickstarted the process. Structural conservation forms the core process, encompassing de-weeding, chemical treatments, grouting, strengthening and propping up areas that are most damaged. The site is then protected through physical elements such as a boundary wall, a gate and general external illumination.
