Satramdas Dhalamal

This is a couture jewellery destination in Park Street, Kolkata. Established in 1890, this establishment has a long history and has catered to the elites of Bengal and other princely states. The brief was to design a “contemporary showroom to display our products with a reference to our”. Located within Queen’s Mansion (an important heritage building), the intervention revolves around the concept of celebration by creating a very contemporary interior look and feel which is at the same time rooted in traditional aesthetics and heritage value. Clearing an unused mezzanine space and unveiling the 18 feet high ceilings with heritage embellishments brought out the grandeur inherent in the space. The showroom is detailed using a mix of wood and glass, further articulated using a juxtaposition of modern customised furniture to sensitively highlight the sensuality of the exhibited designer jewellery. The intervention tries to establish a meaningful dialogue with the past through handpicked antiques which acted as the centre pieces around which the modern backdrop evolved.
