Customs House is one of Kolkata’s most significant Grade I institutional heritage landmarks, notable for its monumental civic presence and pioneering steel construction comparable to the engineering systems of Howrah Bridge.
Over decades, continuous functional modifications and deferred maintenance compromised the building’s architectural integrity and operational efficiency. This project addresses the challenge of transforming a historic institutional structure into a smart, sustainable workplace while preserving its heritage value.
The intervention focuses on restoring the original architectural typology, strengthening the existing fabric, and integrating contemporary building systems to improve performance, efficiency, and resilience. Designed as a phased implementation, the project enables uninterrupted institutional operations while conservation and retrofitting works progress.
With Phase I successfully completed, the project demonstrates how historic institutional buildings can be responsibly renewed to remain functional, sustainable, and relevant for the future.
