Kolkata’s only true example of Art Nouveau architecture, Esplanade Mansion is one of the city’s most significant heritage landmarks. Designed by Martin & Co. for David Joseph Ezra, the building reflects an important moment in architectural history through its refined ornamentation and pioneering iron construction.
Once a vibrant mixed-use destination, the building has suffered decades of neglect, resulting in structural deterioration, poor illumination, and underutilisation.
The ongoing conservation initiative focuses on restoring its historic architectural character while sensitively retrofitting the structure to meet contemporary functional, environmental, and safety requirements. The approach prioritises sustainable adaptation and long-term maintainability, ensuring renewed use without compromising its heritage value.
Envisioned as both a restored landmark and a model for responsible conservation, the project demonstrates how heritage buildings can remain socially relevant, financially viable, and environmentally sustainable within the contemporary city.
