The Howrah Metro Station Vestibule is a sensitive contemporary insertion within the precinct of Howrah Railway Station, one of Kolkata’s most significant Grade I heritage landmarks. Designed as the primary interface between the underground metro station and the historic railway terminal, the project balances complex transportation requirements with the architectural character of its historic setting.
Located above the underground station on the East–West Metro corridor, the vestibule accommodates high volumes of passenger movement while integrating essential functions including ticketing, security screening, vertical circulation, and safe ingress and egress. The design responds to the strategic role of Howrah as a major transport interchange connecting Kolkata with its extensive regional hinterland.
The architectural approach adopts a restrained vocabulary that complements the existing heritage fabric without imitation, ensuring that the new intervention remains respectful, legible, and functionally efficient. Careful planning of circulation, public movement, and operational logistics creates a seamless transition between the metro network and the historic station.
The project demonstrates how contemporary infrastructure can be sensitively integrated into heritage environments, strengthening public mobility while preserving the identity of one of the city's most iconic civic landmarks.
