Set within the riverside settlement of Jirat, the 300-year-old Siddheshwari Kali Temple is a significant spiritual and cultural landmark. This intervention sought to enhance the temple precinct through carefully integrated architectural additions that support ritual practices while preserving its historic and sacred character.
The principal addition is a new Natmandapa—a timber pavilion with a transparent canopy that creates an open, light-filled transitional gathering space for ceremonies and devotional activities. Designed to remain visually permeable, it extends the temple’s sacred sequence into the surrounding landscape.
Traditional terracotta detailing was reintroduced to complete the unfinished temple spires, ensuring continuity with Bengal’s temple architecture. The project demonstrates how sensitive contemporary insertions can enrich historic religious spaces while sustaining their spiritual essence.
