The book documents the layered processes of conception, design, ritual, and public participation that shape the festival, tracing its evolution from intimate household celebrations to a city-wide cultural phenomenon.
It examines Durga Puja as a unique intersection of ritual, public art, urban culture, and social commentary, highlighting how temporary installations transform Kolkata into an expansive open-air gallery of architecture, scenography, and craftsmanship.
Through research by Anjan Mitra, the publication offers a nuanced understanding of how ephemeral design interventions shape urban identity, sustain traditional arts and crafts, and create collective cultural memory.
The project also led to the publication of a Bengali-language volume of the same name by Ananda Publishers.
