Kumartuli, Kolkata’s historic artisan quarter, is internationally recognised for its centuries-old tradition of idol-making and craftsmanship. The redevelopment of Kumartuli Ghat seeks to restore and reimagine this culturally significant riverfront precinct through a sensitive framework of urban design and conservation.
Despite its deep cultural importance, the precinct faces fragmented infrastructure, deteriorating riverfront conditions, and underutilised public spaces. The project aims to transform it into an inclusive and vibrant public destination that strengthens the historic relationship between Kumartuli, the river, and the city.
Through carefully considered spatial interventions, improved public infrastructure, and conservation-led enhancements, the initiative seeks to create a renewed riverfront environment that supports cultural activity, community life, and public engagement while preserving the area’s working heritage.
Undertaken in collaboration with SAVE, the project envisions Kumartuli Ghat as a dynamic public realm where craftsmanship, ritual, memory, and urban life continue to intersect.
