MON-CHASHA

Mon-Chasha—meaning “Cultivator of Mind”—was conceived as a community-led rural tourism initiative to support the long-term sustenance of an orphanage in rural Bengal. The project embodies an integrated approach to sustainability, combining ecological sensitivity, economic viability, and social responsiveness.

Envisioned as a space deeply rooted in the essence of rural Bengal, the design draws from both the tangible and intangible dimensions of the region’s built and cultural heritage. The architecture responds to its context through a language that is locally grounded, creating an immersive environment that celebrates the character and traditions of the surrounding landscape.

The implementation was carefully phased, shaped by two key considerations: the limited capital available for the initial intervention and the need to establish systems for periodic maintenance, additions, and alterations. This phased strategy ensured not only the project’s long-term adaptability but also continuous opportunities for engagement with the local community.

Over the years, Mon-Chasha has evolved into a distinctive destination and is recognised as one of the six must-visit tourism projects in West Bengal.

The project was honoured with the HUDCO Sustainable Design Award for its innovative and responsible approach to sustainable development.
