An enduring Victorian landmark since 1874, the New Market Clock Tower is one of Kolkata’s most recognisable civic icons. This conservation project focused on restoring both its architectural integrity and the historic four-faced clock mechanism manufactured by Gillett & Johnston.
Years of weathering and deterioration had affected the tower’s structural fabric and silenced its chimes. The restoration involved meticulous conservation of Victorian detailing, stabilisation of weather-damaged elements, and full restoration of the clockworks to reinstate accurate timekeeping.
Guided by principles of authenticity and minimal intervention, the project demonstrates how sensitive conservation can revive historic structures while ensuring their continued relevance within the contemporary city. Undertaken in collaboration with TRISYS Foundation, the restoration reinstates an important symbol of Kolkata’s architectural legacy.
