The historic residence of Rani Rashmoni in Janbazar is one of Kolkata’s most significant Grade I domestic heritage landmarks, embodying the legacy of one of nineteenth-century Bengal’s foremost social reformers and philanthropists.
This concept proposal explores a sensitive adaptive reuse strategy to support the long-term conservation of the mansion while respecting its historic character. The intervention transforms two existing rooftop chilekotha rooms into a thoughtfully designed rentable unit, creating a sustainable revenue-generating model for the upkeep of the larger heritage property.
Designed with minimal intervention, the proposal works within the existing architectural fabric, using a contextually grounded material palette and incorporating inherited furniture and artefacts to preserve the spatial memory of the house.
The project demonstrates how carefully calibrated adaptive reuse can create viable pathways for conservation while opening historic domestic spaces to renewed relevance and occupation.
