The Temple of Vedic Planetarium is the culmination of a long-standing collaboration with the International Society for Krishna Consciousness at Mayapur. Evolving over nearly two decades of design exploration, discussion, and refinement, the project reflects a sustained effort to develop a design brief and functional programme that is deeply aligned with the spiritual values, rituals, and aspirations of ISKCON.
At its core, the project sought to identify an appropriate temple typology and architectural language capable of supporting the unique requirements of Vaishnavite worship practices. In scale, architectural expression, and spiritual engagement, the project stands apart as a singular sacred institution—truly envisioned as “Ek Advut Mandir” (A Unique Temple).
Unlike conventional Hindu temple typologies, the Vaishnavite tradition emphasises collective worship, with kirtan and parikrama forming integral components of ritual practice. This necessitated the creation of expansive congregational spaces capable of accommodating dynamic and participatory forms of worship. The central prayer hall was therefore designed to host approximately 10,000 devotees.
The broader programme includes a range of associated facilities such as bhog preparation areas, devotee centres, a prasadam hall, a cosmic planetarium, exhibition spaces, and interpretation halls—all designed to support the functioning of this large-scale spiritual and cultural complex.
Drawing inspiration from landmark architectural precedents across the world, the design culminated in a monumental temple dome rising to 100 metres. The proposal carefully responds to site constraints while incorporating efficient crowd management systems to ensure safety, security, and seamless movement for large congregations.
Extensive exploration of material palettes and architectural detailing helped shape an environment that resonates with the devotional ethos of ISKCON while meeting the aspirations of its global community of devotees and visitors.
