Staff Housing for Hari Machines Limited

This housing project in Orissa involved the design of three different typologies of housing for Workers and Other Staff at the Hari Machines Limited production unit. The preliminary exercise involved siting and distribution of these blocks across the 7 acre site.

The individual units in each type had strict requirements to adhere to absolutely same areas, and the project adopted a, arrangement that placed individual units around one (or multiple) open to sky courtyards. Though similar in the basic logic of arrangements, there were significant height and scale variations. Our material and faced explorations with the G+3 Type-I quarters gave us certain guidelines - creating interesting juxtapositions of finishes and volumes to break down the massiveness of the building. The project used and innovated within the established design language for Type-II and Type- III quarters also.

The stress on adequate semi-open spaces, balconies, open spaces, parks, green corridors and also on well lit, well ventilated and sanitary lived spaces resulted in an impactful, yet homely lived-in feel of the residential zone thus developed.
